Specialising Helping Those Dealing With Dementia
Dementia can significantly alter our relationships, particularly with partners, making it crucial to acknowledge the impact of a diagnosis and the subsequent adjustments. When faced with an early diagnosis, having access to an empathetic professional who understands dementia is helpful for navigating this complex journey, and prioritising self-care.
With over 20 years of experience working with people living with dementia, I have gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by both the person with memory issues, and their families. In 2011, I founded Pathways Through Dementia, a charity dedicated to addressing legal and financial concerns while also providing mediation services for families struggling to make decisions in the best interests of their loved ones. At the same time a colleague and friend developed a successful programme in York supporting couples living with dementia, revealing a gap in therapeutic approaches to addressing the illness’s effect on relationships. This is what lead me to broaden my services to couples and individuals.
Combining my therapeutic skills and extensive knowledge of dementia, I offer a discounted rate for couples where one partner has recently received a diagnosis. I also offer counselling for individuals affected by dementia who need a space to talk through their concerns and emotions in conjunction with the day to day challenges they may be facing. I believe that providing emotional support during this testing time is vital. One hour sessions are charged at £55 for a couple and £45 for an individual.
